It opened its doors in 1967 as the first elementary school in Anaheim Hills, and has grown tremendously since. It is a unique school in that it only serves grades Kindergarten through three while its neighboring campus, Crescent Intermediate School, serves grades four through six as well as GATE classes. The school performs well on state testing, and had a strong API score of 869 in 2007. The school was named a California Distinguished School in 2000 by the state after strong state testing scores.

The ethnic makeup of Crescent Primary is 50% White, 18% Hispanic, 13% Asian, 3% African American, and 16% other/no response. 3% of the student body were English language learners, and 2% of the school was eligible for reduced price lunches.

The school operates on a year round schedule. Students who attend Crescent Primary move onto Crescent Intermediate School for grades four through six, followed by El Rancho Charter School for grades seven and eight, then Canyon High School for grades nine through twelve. All three schools are located in the Anaheim Hills community.
